Embroidered Cushion

Updated: Jun 22, 2023

My first project since my C&G course was an embroidered cushion.

Upcylced skirt panel embellished with embroidery. Cream background with blue and red flowers.

So for my first post course project, I kind of wanted to do something fairly quick, just to get something done. I think partly just to get into the swing of doing my own projects, but also because my last assessment piece had taken months, so I just wanted to do something a bit quicker!

Old Summer skirt ready to be upcycled into a cushion

This was one of my old Summer skirts - I loved it. But it had definitely got beyond the point where I should be wearing out in public! It was worn in a lot of places, but I absolutely still loved the fabric. So I decided with a bit of embroidery it would make a lovely embroidered cushion.

Fabric and threads ready to start stitching upcycled skirt project.

I laid the fabric out and started gathering threads. I thought the pattern was a little bit too bright for my decor, so I found some blue transparent fabric in my stash - no idea where it came from, but there was quite a bit!

Work in progress of upcycled skirt project. Flowery skirt fabric, covered with sheer fabric with some flowers stitched.

Then I just started stitching, no real plan, just the intention of enhancing the fabric and having some fun. I didn't use too many different stitches, mainly just stitches I could do without really thinking too much. I also cut out some motifs from the remaining fabric and applied them over the top to add variety.

Once I'd finished embroidering, it was time to dust off the sewing machine and make it into a cushion. I found some navy bias binding in my stash, and some left over piping cord, so decided to use that as my edging - nice and quick, as I already had my next project ready to start and I was keen to get cracking!

So here it is my finished cushion, overall I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

As well as choosing new projects to work on, I realised it was time to spend some more time drawing to improve my embroideries. Read about that here: Drawing and Designing (claireharveyembroidery.com)
